Top 5 Ways To Prevent Dry Eyes

Patients affected with dry eyes deal with itching and burning of the eyes constantly. Medical conditions such as faulty eye surgery and inherent allergies can cause these symptoms. Externalities such as pollution and overheated surroundings can contribute to these conditions as well. Women over 40 experience dry eye symptoms due to hormonal changes that cause reduced tear production in the eyes. Those who wear contacts may experience irritation and itching as well. To relieve these symptoms, all that is required are some lifestyle changes. Importantly, seeking the consultation of a LASIK eye surgeon from a premier eye clinic such as Sugarland Eye & Laser Center is well worth it.
1. Use artificial tears
Doctor say that most people under-use artificial tears. Artificial tears can be used from twice a day to every 20 minutes. There is no harm in using artificial tears optimally. They contribute to the cleansing of the eyes. In the long term, this process helps restore natural tears.
2. Use artificial tears when blow-drying hair
Often, without notice, eyes could dry up when blow-drying hair. The warm air from the blow dryer evaporates moisture from the eyes. So to keep this from happening, use artificial tears before and after the blow-drying activity. As an extra precautionary measure, use artificial tears when in the middle of the activity.
3. Abstain from alcohol
Alcohol causes severe dehydration. It depletes the overall water conserves in the body. The eyes could be incapacitated to produce natural tears for those who drink excess alcohol. For those already suffering from dry eyes, they should abstain from alcohol altogether.
4. Remove contact lenses when not in use
Dry eye symptoms may become more intense with the constant use of contact lenses. So at the end of the work day, removing your lenses is a simple and effective solution. It eases the eyes and allows them to produce natural tears.
5. Bedtime treatment
A tear ointment, if applied before bedtime, reduces the chances of a person waking up in the morning to scratchy and burning eyes. Tear ointment is generally thicker than artificial tears. Available as an over-the-counter product, it helps keep eyes hydrated and lubricated. But use it only before sleeping and not during the daytime as after application the eyes tend to produce blurry vision.
Causes of Dry Eyes
Fault refractive laser eye surgery can lead to dry eyes if the procedure is performed incorrectly. So it is important to get treated at a qualified eye clinic and by renowned eye surgeons. People over the age of 50 may experience dry eyes. With age, the ability of the body to produce natural tears may diminish. Tear gland damage hampers tear production and patients are required to seek immediate treatment to resolve these conditions.
Some drugs that treat high blood pressure, anti-depressants, antihistamines, decongestants, acne treatment creams, etc. can cause dry eyes. Those undergoing treatment for dry eyes should avoid the outdoors when it is windy. For sometime tasks that require concentration is avoided to expedite recovery time.
