We at Houston LASIK & Eye, formerly Sugarland Eye & Laser Center continuously strive to provide the highest quality of eye care and treatment to our patients. As one of the leading eye centers in Houston, we offer the latest technological innovations in LASIK or laser eye surgery. So we are pleased to introduce our new Diopsys® ERG and VEP Machine.
What is the Diopsys® ERG?
The Diopsys® ERG is a vision testing system and is part of the Diopsys® NOVA set of tests. It is an office based electroretinography (ERG) module that provides doctors objective and useful information about the retinal cells of the eye, particularly the macular. What makes it very useful is that it provides eye doctors information about the performance of the eye’s retinal cells. Here are what makes the Diopsys® ERG different:
- It provides a very objective result every time since it does require pushing or verbal response.
- Interpretation of results is more accurate because reports include quantitative information.
- Patient diagnosis and care is more effective because reports are formatted to meet patient management.
- Patient response tracking is possible since the system documents results of the intervention.
Most importantly the Diopsys® ERG meets the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV) standards.
How the Diopsys® ERG works
The Diopsys® ERG collects information that can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the retina, such as Toxic Maculophaties, Age-Related Macular Degeneration or AMD, and Diabetes Macular Edema or DME. These diseases generally show a pattern of deterioration of the macula that affects the central or paracentral area of the macula. In testing the Diopsys® uses two degrees of stimulus, the Concentric Stimulus Field, which reports information that helps in the diagnosis and treatment of the retina. It makes use of full-screen stimulus with different contrast levels for more accurate testing. The information or data collected then shows the level of the dysfunction or deterioration of the macula. The result, therefore, is more objective and accurate.
Eye doctors also find it easier and more effective in testing because it can be manually customized. The stimulus can be customized manually to fit the patient and the pathology of the eye problem. This includes manually customizing the pattern size, the contrast level, and the pattern.
What is the Diopsys® VEP?
The Diopsys® VEP is part of the Diopsys® NOVA set of tests. VEP stands for Visual Evoked Potential which is capable of measuring objectively the response of the visual pathway from the anterior segment of the eye up to the visual cortex. With the VEP, testing for visual pathway disorders is more accurate particularly if it is used with the other diagnostic tests. Similar to the Diopsys® ERG, it provides an objective response as it does not need button pushing or verbal response. Interpretation of results is also more accurate because reports include quantitative information, like the Diopsys® ERG. And not surprisingly, it also meets the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV) standards.
Houston LASIK & Eye leads in providing premium LASIK technologies to Houston, Sugar Land, and the surrounding region. The Center’s award-winning medical director introduced revolutionary technologies such as iLASIK to the region. This technology is used by NASA astronauts, Navy SEALS, and Air Force fighter pilots. At Houston LASIK & Eye, you can now receive the same treatment. For more information, please call (281) 240-0478.
