What is refractive surgery?

LASIK is the abbreviation for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. This procedure is used to modify the shape of the cornea in order to correct vision problems such as astigmatism, myopia, and hypermetropia. However, this surgery may not be suitable for everyone. If the patient has changed contact lenses or glasses in the past year they cannot be treated. People with autoimmune diseases and diabetes cannot be treated as post-surgery recovery is slow. Professional boxers, wrestlers, or anyone engaging in high contact sports cannot have this surgery as their eyes can be injured.

How is this surgery performed?

This surgery is performed within half an hour. A reclining chair is used to seat the patient. After the application of a numbing lotion in the eye, a lid speculum is deployed to keep the eyelids open. A flap is cut in the cornea and after this, the surgeon takes over to perform the corrective procedure. The objective is to get the eyes to orient in their correct position. After the surgery, a shielded eye gear is provided to cover the eyes and allow the flap to heal naturally.

What are the precautions to be taken?

A good refractive laser eye surgery clinic such as Houston LASIK & Eye conducts a thorough assessment of the patient. This baseline evaluation determines the eligibility of the patient for this type of eye surgery. The evaluating doctor advises the patient to stop wearing contact lenses several weeks before the baseline assessment and use glasses instead. This is because contact lenses alter the shape of the cornea and deny accurate estimates of the corneal size and orientation during the baseline evaluation.

What happens after a refractive surgery?

The doctor enumerates a detailed list of dos and don’ts. The following are some of them.

  • Rubbing the eye is strictly prohibited as it may dislodge the corneal flap.
  • After surgery, the patient is advised to take two days rest to avoid direct contact with sunlight.
  • The patient is asked to re-visit the doctor 48 hours after the surgery for the re-evaluation of the results.
  • The patient is asked to refrain from applying eye lotions and creams to avoid infections.
  • After a refractive eye surgery, it is important to avoid hot tub baths and contact sports for at least a month.

The benefits of refractive eye surgery

  •  A majority of people get improved vision after the surgery. The results are immediate and recovery is quick, requiring no bandage or stitches.
  • There is no need to wear glasses or contact lenses.
  • The patient is able to participate in a variety of activities and also enroll in the armed forces.
