AcrySof Toric IOL: A Lens For the Future

Good vision makes for a quality life. Some patients have significant cataracts and astigmatism. As long as the astigmatism classifies as the regular kind, its possible for an AcrySof Toric lens to alleviate the problem. AcrySof Toric lens developed as an artificial replacement for a natural lens. The lens located in the cornea offers a clear window that allows light to hit the back of the eye to start the vision process. If the lens clouds or becomes stiff, it does not work as well and vision blurs. With astigmatism a deviation in the curvature of the eye keeps light rays from meeting at a common point. It takes a highly qualified surgeon such as Dr. Amajad Khokhar and his team at Sugarland Eye & Laser Center in Houston to give the best outcome. An honest conversation by the doctor and patient determines if AcrySof Toric intraocular lens becomes the best option for that patient.
Procedures
First and foremost, accurate measurement of the astigmatism matters. Different types of astigmatism exist such as myopic, hyperopic, and mixed. Myopic the meridian (an imaginary line between axis) of the eye has near sightedness. Hyperopic the meridian of the eye has farsightedness. Mixed means the meridian has one side farsighted and the other side nearsighted.
Astigmatism gives headaches, eyestrain, and distortion in sight. The cylinder has to become measured which means finding the amount of lens power it takes to correct the astigmatism. Then the axis becomes measured which refers to the meridian. A toric calculator helps measure for the main incision and to determine the appropriate axis and orientation. A precise reference marking happens with the patient looking forward and upright. Then the cornea becomes marked at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock position. From there the surgeon determines where and when to cut or laser. As you see the surgery involves much expertise and is quite personalized. Make sure the doctor you chose specializes in laser eye surgery or implants such as Acrysof Toric.
Follow up
After surgery the doctor will see a patient several times in 3-week period. Over that time vision will improve. Patients often receive antibiotics, pain relief medication, and steroid drops. For most patients the healing process goes well and the results are good. AcrySof Toric has an especially high success rate. It corrects up to +4.5 D corneal astigmatism. Surgeons report easy alignment with this particular brand. It has excellent rotational stability which has been a problem with artificial lens. Nine out of ten patients have distance vision 20/40 or better.
AcrySof Toric Advantages
The Acrysof lens has been around for some time. It has proven to be reliable and have better post op outcomes than other lens. It reduces residual refractive cylinders and gives more freedom from wearing glasses by covering a range of distances. It only takes care of astigmatism though. If a patient has other conditions, then they would have to choose which condition to fix, but for patients that only have astigmatism it works well.

Sugarland Eye & Laser Center leads in providing premium LASIK technologies to Houston, Sugar Land, and the surrounding region. The center’s award-winning medical director introduced revolutionary technologies such as iLASIK to the region. This technology is used by NASA astronauts, Navy SEALS and Air Force fighter pilots.
