May is Healthy Vision Month

About 2.9 million Americans above the age of 40 have a visual impairment. Another 1.3 million Americans above the age of 40 have been classified as legally blind according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. So, the National Eye Institute declared the Healthy Vision Month as May to educate Americans on ways to prevent blindness and low vision. They encourage everyone to have an eye exam just like the ones done daily at Houston LASIK. Nearly two-thirds of the blindness and visual impairment happens to women. Women’s longer lives increase the chances of visual impairment plus their susceptibility to autoimmune diseases and cancer. Add in that the fluctuation of hormones their entire life makes visual impairment more likely, having an eye exam in Houston should become routine.

What to do to prevent visual impairment

The National Eye Institute has developed a 5-point approach to lessening the likelihood of visual impairment.

  1. Get a complete dilated eye exam

Houston Lasik performs these to get a full view of the inner eye and how it is working. It gives a baseline for future exams and determines treatment if any.

  1. Strive for health

To build good tissue in the body or the eyes ensure a good supply of nutrients. Many ways exist to make that happen. Nutritional supplements emphasizing vitamins and minerals for the eyes would do it. A balanced menu of items tuned to your bodies needs would too.

  1. Wear protective covering on the eyes for some activities

Safety glasses at work when the job requires it and at home when doing activities that could potentially threaten the eyes. Chemical splashes, projectiles, and foreign particles remain the leading causes of eye injury.

  1. Check the family history for genetic eye issues.

Find out what eye issues prior family members and today’s family members have. Some conditions have a genetic component. Then find those things that lessen the likelihood of getting that condition or at least minimizing it.

  1. Protect the eyes from the sun

With our long lives, sun exposure has become more of a priority than in the past. We now know how the sun damages the eyes over time. By using sunglasses and visors, a person can lessen the likelihood of damage.

Refractive errors

Houston LASIK has a specialty in correcting refractive errors and uses the latest laser eye surgery techniques.  A refractive error defines as the shape of the eye does not bend light in a way that gives a clear vision resulting in blurriness. If diagnosed with myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism the clinic has an array of options to improve the vision. A full line of sunglasses, stylish safety glasses, and eye accessories are available. They take care of military personnel eye needs as approved by the USA government, so troops can have tip-top vision. The staff has training to answer any questions and will spend time counseling people who have questions about their eyes. The ophthalmologists will give a consultation if a person decides on a LASIK procedure.

Houston Lasik leads in providing premium LASIK technologies to Houston, Sugar Land, and the surrounding region. The center’s award-winning medical director introduced revolutionary technologies such as iLASIK to the region. This technology is used by NASA astronauts, Navy SEALS and Air Force fighter pilots. At Houston Lasik, you can now receive the same treatment. For more information, please call (281) 240-0478.
