How long has it been since you considered the health of your eyes? Now, compare that to health of your skin. Like many, we seldom think about our eyesight, let along the things to do to preserve good vision. Often we only think about the health of our eyes when we start suffering from poor vision or when we notice something is not right. We do not realize that we can actually enjoy having good eyesight until we reach old age if we only take good care of our eyes. So to help you do this the easy way, here are the top five things that you can do to preserve your sight.
1. Have a Healthy Diet
Just like any other part of our body, proper diet and nutrition help to keep our eyes healthy. It is important to have a balanced diet. This includes eating the right amount of green and leafy vegetables and fruits since they are an important source of vitamins and minerals.
Food that is rich in lutein has been proven to prevent age related vision problems, such as macular degeneration. In fact, a study found that 6 mg of lutein a day can decrease the risk of corn, lettuce, peas, Brussels sprouts, beans, tangerine, orange, okra, celery, tomato, peaches, grapefruit and melon.
2. Live Healthy
Daily exercise is essential to having good health and this includes having healthy eyes. Of course when it comes to our eyes, living healthy means not smoking, reading with ample light and not spending too much time in front of the computer or television.
3. Protect Your Eyes
Wearing UV sunglasses when spending extended periods of time outdoors is the only way you can protect your eyes from UV exposure. Whether you are gardening, on a long drive or at the beach, make it a habit to wear UV sunglasses. At work, if you spend a lot of time in front of the computer, make sure you pause every twenty minutes and look around to give your eyes a break. There are also certain work environments that can make your eyes vulnerable to injury, such as industrial plants and manufacturing facilities. If you work in any of these environments, make sure you wear protective eye gear.
4. Do Not Rub Your Eyes Intensely
Rubbing one’s eyes too much can result in the weakening of the cornea. This is something that a lot of people do not know and yet it is very important in keeping our eyes healthy.
5. Regular Eye Exams
Visit your eye doctor every two years and once a year if you wear contact lenses. With a regular eye exam, your doctor can correct any vision problem before it gets worse. You can visit Sugarland Eye & Laser Center, the leading LASIK or laser eye surgery center in Houston for a checkup or if you have any problems with your vision.
