What is Laser Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is the removal of the natural lens of the eye that has been clouded by cataracts and then replacing it with an artificial lens. In traditional cataract surgery, the eye surgeon manually creates an incision in the eye using a diamond blade. High-Frequency ultrasound is then used to break up cataracts and the tiny pieces are vacuumed out with a fine tube. The success of the procedure largely depends on the skill and experience of the cataract surgeon.

The new computer-guided laser cataract surgery removes the variability of surgeon experience out of the picture. In a laser cataract surgery, your surgeon uses an imaging technology called optical coherence tomography (OCT), allowing them to create a treatment plan that is precise and customized to your eye.

Instead of a knife, the surgeon then uses a computer-controlled femtosecond laser to create corneal incisions and break up the cataract. The fragments are removed from the eye with suction.
The femtosecond laser used in laser cataract surgery offers a level of accuracy and safety that far exceeds manual surgery methods. It is less invasive, allowing your eyes to heal much faster afterward.

Am I a Laser Cataract Surgery Candidate?

If you have cataracts, you are a potential candidate for laser cataract surgery.. People who have cataracts generally experience blurred vision, clouded vision, and light sensitivity. Cataracts typically affect people 50 years and older, although anyone may develop it at any age.

Laser Cataract Surgery Procedure & Intraocular Lens (IOL)

Laser cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that is painless and lasts only a few minutes. Before the surgery, you will be given eye drops to numb the pain. After the natural lens of the eye is removed, an intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted by the surgeon to provide you a new vision.

Our practice offers a variety of lenses for patients to choose from, which allow patients to see at different distances and customize vision to best fit their lifestyle. Types of lenses offered at Houston LASIK & Eye include Multifocal Intraocular Lenses, Accommodative Intraocular Lenses, and Toric Intraocular Lenses.

Laser Cataract Surgery Recovery

After the procedure, you will be provided with an eye patch to wear overnight, as well as eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation. You will need someone to drive you home after the surgery, but after 24 hours, you will already enjoy your new, clear vision. Total recovery takes about two weeks.

Houston LASIK & Eye is dedicated to bringing you the most advanced and safest option in eye surgery.
