Precautions after LASIK Surgery

Many patients that have undergone the laser treatment for vision correction would agree that they feel normal after the first day of surgery. Some even report they feel a change in their vision almost immediately. However, if you give your eyes time to heal properly, it will still improve with time. The process of recovery is generally very quick and mostly people experience no discomfort. With proper care you should be able to resume your normal activities in a matter of days with better clarity of vision. However, for a high rate of success, you must follow some post-operative care instructions for a quick recovery.
On the D-Day
The LASIK procedure generally lasts for only 10 minutes per eye. After the surgery is concluded, you must rest your eyes for at least half an hour in the exam room and if you feel anything different report it to your surgeon immediately. It is always better to ask as many questions as possible regarding proper care before you leave the eye care center. When you get home, it is advisable to limit your screen time and avoid any use of a laptop or TV, cell phones, reading, etc. Try to sleep for at least 2 hours and use your shields to sleep for at least 4 nights.
The First Day after the Procedure
On this day you may feel itchy, scratchy or sensitive to light and redness in the eyes. However, as your vision heals, these symptoms will gradually subside. You may feel that your vision is blurry, that also heals itself as the eyes restore to health. You can also use prescribed artificial tears as recommended by your surgeon post operation to keep your eyes well lubricated.
You must wear your goggles at all times especially when you wake up in the morning the day after your surgery. You must ensure that water does not enter your eyes for at least one week after the surgery. While take a bath, keep your eyes tightly shut and preferably pat-wash the area near the eyes with a clean towel.
Do not use any eye makeup like mascara for a period of at least 1 week. You must also avoid any sporting activities like horse riding, swimming, etc. You must avoid dust at any cost until the healing process is complete as it can not only irritate, but also cause infection. In case of dust in the eyes, use the preservative free artificial tear drops to help flush the particles out. Absolutely avoid rubbing the eyes in case of itching as it may displace the corneal flap due to friction.
You may feel highly sensitive to light, glare and experience sharpness of vision after surgery. However, be aware that these conditions are only temporary and present until the period of normal stabilization of one month.
