IntraLase Laser Technology: The Latest in Laser Eye Surgery

IntraLase laser technology is the latest eye correction procedure available. It is 100% blade-free. The IntraLase procedure is done using IntraLase FS or iFS. IntraLase laser technology is not something new. In fact, more than 5 million LASIK surgeries have been successfully completed with the use of IntraLase laser technology. The good thing about this technology is that clinical surveys showed that when compared to the microkeratomes procedure, the IntraLase is what the patients are more satisfied with.
What is blade-free surgery?
In a typical LASIK surgery, eye surgeons use microkeratome in creating flaps. It is a type of blade, a surgical instrument that cuts the LASIK flap as it moves in the eye. Now, the main difference between the microkeratome and the IntraLase is that risk for complications are minimized. This is because in a typical LASIK surgery, the most common cause of complication is the microkeratome. In other words, although LASIK is a safe procedure and complications rarely occur, when they do, the cause is from the blade, the microkeratome, that is used in surgery. With the IntraLase, there is no longer the risk of complication from the use of the microkeratome blade. This increases the likelihood of a successful surgery with a positive outcome.
What are the advantages of IntraLase?
Aside from reducing the risk of complications from the microkeratome blade, other advantages to the use of the IntraLase surgery exist. One of the most significant advantages to this method is the results. In a study on patients who had IntraLase surgery on one eye and microkeratome in the other, it was found that the patients who had IntraLase surgery on one eye and microkeratome on the other, the majority of patients found the IntraLase was the better method. Another significant advantage of the IntraLase comes as it allows for customized surgery. With the IntraLase, the doctor can create the flap that matches the shape of the patient’s eye. From the size to the angle, the flaps an be specifically cut in its correct shape. Now, the most significant advantage of the IntraLase is that it is more effective. A study has shown that when it comes to the outcome of the surgery, patients report a better outcome with the IntraLase than with typical LASIK surgery.
How IntraLase surgery is done
In a typical LASIK procedure, the corneal flap is created using the microkeratome. In an IntraLase procedure, a corneal flap is also created, but with this method, instead of the blade of the microkeratome, laser light is used. The laser light cuts the specific shape that is necessary for the eye. The light comes in pulses that create tiny bubbles in the corneal surface. This way the tissue of the cornea is cut very gently. So instead of the blade cutting the tissue, laser light is use. Nothing touches the tissue except the laser light.
