How to Maintain Healthy Eyes

Taking good care of our eyes is easy and yet we often take our sense of sight for granted. How many of us take good care of our eyes by ensuring that they are healthy and protected? To help you keep your eyes healthy, here are some simple ways on how to maintain healthy eyes.

1. Have a healthy lifestyle

Our eyes, like the other parts of our body, can only be healthy if we are healthy. This means that we should eat right and live right if we want to have healthy eyes. Certain foods, nutrients, and vitamins are good for the eyes, such as omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. They are also known to prevent age-related problems and conditions, such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Here are some foods that are good for the eyes:

  • Green, leafy vegetables
  • Oily fish
  • Eggs, beans, nuts
  • Vitamin C rich foods such as oranges

It is not enough to simply eat right if you want to have good eyesight up through your senior years. Certain activities can actually cause eye conditions and problems so you should avoid them. For example, smoking is known to cause cataracts. Another example is if you are always working on a computer. If you are working on a computer for many long hours, make sure to give your eyes proper rest.

2. Have a regular eye checkup

Ask yourself, which would you rather lose, your teeth or your sight? If you have a regular dental checkup shouldn’t you also have a regular eye checkup? According to the American Optometric Association, a regular eye checkup is one way of preventing vision loss. This is because there are certain eye conditions and diseases that have no signs and symptoms. Often, they become noticeable only when the condition is already too serious for treatment.

A regular eye checkup is even more important for children because conditions have different symptoms in children. One example is farsightedness. In children, farsightedness is not characterized by difficulty seeing close objects. Instead, the condition is characterized by headaches, constant rubbing of the eyes and reading problems. It is therefore important for children to have regular eye checkups.

For a thorough eye checkup, you might want to visit Sugarland Eye & Laser Center, one of the leading LASIK or laser eye surgery centers in Houston.

3. Protect your eyes

Protecting the eyes is a practice that we often ignore. We do not always wear UV protection eyeglasses when going out during the day. Exposure to UV rays increases one’s chances of developing cataracts and macular degeneration. We should, therefore, wear sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays. If you are wearing contact lenses with UV protection, it is still best to wear UV protection sunglasses.

Certain activities, including sports, may cause eye injury. It is best, therefore, to protect your eyes every time you are working with hazardous materials or engaging in sports that can lead to eye injury.

Houston LASIK & Eye leads in providing premium LASIK technologies to Houston, Sugar land, and the surrounding region. The Center’s award-winning medical director introduced revolutionary technologies such as iLASIK to the region. This technology is used by NASA astronauts, Navy SEALS and Air Force fighter pilots. At Houston LASIK & Eye, you can now receive the same treatment. For more information, please call (281) 240-0478.
